How to Pray Istikhara: The 3 Steps to Authentic Guidance

Making big life decisions can be overwhelming. Whether it is a career move, a business venture, or marriage, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us a beautiful and simple way to seek clarity directly from Allah. This is the prayer of Istikhara.

Many Muslims wonder how to pray Istikhara when they face a difficult choice. The answer lies in following the pure Sunnah and having a sincere intention (Niyyah) to follow Allah’s decree.

What is the Purpose of Learning How to Pray Istikhara?

Istikhara literally means “to seek the best.” It is a Sunnah prayer performed when a Muslim has a choice to make and wants Allah to facilitate what is good and turn away what is harmful.

As I often share in my Stories, faith and seeking divine counsel are our greatest strengths. This guide on how to pray Istikhara follows the authentic prophetic method found in Sahih al-Bukhari.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Pray Istikhara According to Sunnah

To perform this Salah correctly according to the Sunnah, follow these three simple steps. The most important part of how to pray Istikhara is the sincerity of your heart and your total reliance on Allah’s power.

  1. Perform Wudu: Ensure you are in a state of purity before you begin.
  2. Pray two Rak’ahs: Perform a voluntary (Nafl) prayer. You can recite any Surah you wish after Surah Al-Fatiha.
  3. Recite the Dua: This supplication should be made immediately after finishing the prayer (after the final Tasleem).

The Authentic Dua: The Core of How to Pray Istikhara Correctly

Reciting the Dua is the core of how to pray Istikhara correctly. When you reach the part in brackets, mention your specific decision (e.g., marriage, travel, purchasing goods, job offer).

The Transliteration: “Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi’ilmika, wa astaqdiruka bi-qudratika, wa as’aluka min fadlika al-’azim. Fa’innaka taqdiru wala aqdiru, wa ta’lamu wala a’lamu, wa anta ‘allamu-l-ghuyub.

Allahumma, in kunta ta’lamu anna hadha-l-amra [mention the thing to be decided] khairun li fi dini wa ma’ashi wa ‘aqibati amri, faqdurhu li wa yassirhu li thumma barik li fihi. Wa in kunta ta’lamu anna hadha-l-amra [mention the thing to be decided] sharrun li fi dini wa ma’ashi wa ‘aqibati amri, fasrifhu ‘anni wasrifni ‘anhu. Waqdur li al-khaira haithu kana thumma ardini bihi.”

The English Translation: “O Allah, I seek Your guidance by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty. For You have power, and I do not. You know, and I do not. You are the Knower of the unseen.

O Allah, if You know that this matter [mention the thing to be decided] is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and my affairs, then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless me in it. Use this prayer to seek Barakah (blessings) in your path.

But if You know that this matter [mention the thing to be decided] is harmful to me in my religion, my livelihood, and my affairs, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and ordain for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me content with it.”

3 Myths vs. The Sunnah

One common mistake people make when learning how to pray Istikhara is waiting for a dream. To keep your practice pure, remember these facts:

  • Myth: You must see a dream or a specific color (like green or white).
  • Fact: The “answer” is simply that the path becomes easy if it is good for you, or Allah creates obstacles if it is bad.
  • Myth: You must sleep immediately after the prayer.
  • Fact: You can pray at any time and continue with your day.

Trusting the Decree of Allah

Once you have performed the prayer and recited the Dua, the final step is Tawakkul (Reliance). Move forward with your decision.

Now that you know how to pray Istikhara, you can move forward with confidence, knowing that the Creator is steering you toward what is best. As the Prophet ﷺ beautifully reminded us:

“Amazing is the affair of the believer, for there is good for him in every matter…” — (Sahih Muslim)
