Perfume: The Sunnah

A joyous smell strengthens the human spirit and soul which is the centre of your being. The aromas of life such as a brewed coffee, freshly burnt incense and the fragrance of a well-cooked meal traverses nature to the realm of the spirit and fills the body and mind with strength and power.

Think of the Sunnah as a perfume that guides you and strengthens your faith. The perfume is personal to you, as is your faith; something you carry and refresh everywhere you go. And this perfume can be applied to the faith you carry with you. The perfume of the Sunnah is refreshing and uplifting guidance that you wear with you, everywhere you go. The smells of the earth and those of the ones you love are pleasantries bestowed upon you. Faith seeps into your soul, just as a perfume you wear on your skin.

The Prophet Muhammad emphasised his love for perfumes in the Hadiths:

“Allah is Pleasant and loves pleasant things, Clean and loves cleanliness, Generous and loves generosity…”
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that “The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would not refuse perfume.” [Bukhari and Tirmidhi]
